Optimization of existing installation

There are 3 main fields to study : steam production, distribution network and steam use.

To optimize steam production we need to control water quality and study energy balance calculation. This energy balance aim at finding out where to improve the installation.

Steam network optimization is realized by studying heat loss in distribution. We have to look for the optimum insulating (energy saving versus insulating cost) and to setup a preventive maintenance (periodical control of critical pieces in function of possible losses, for example : drain-cock)

Steam use optimization is based on machine regulation control and on study of heat exchanges in the application. Most often steam quality is a critical parameter.

Modification/design of installation

New installation design or modifying an existing installation is a good opportunity to integrate optimal solutions. When designing a new installation, the first problem is to correctly plan for the future needs. Generally, adding up equipments power and considering an adequate superposition factor you can obtain a first idea of the needed power for the steam production. After that you must consider network losses that depend directly of equipments location and working pressure. With all those data, it's possible to determine the best boiler for the application.

You have to take into account locals norms to decide the boilers location. Each country, in addition to impose strict conditions on gas pipes, regulate building design and construction. An improvement for this last step would be to define preventive maintenance of parts depending on potentials losses. In case of smaller modifications, calculation will be limited to heat needs, heat-exchangers and energy storage if needed.
